The At-Home Sleep Apnea Study from Sleep Doctor is a disposable sleep apnea test you may administer at home. Each device consists of finger, wrist, and chest sensors that monitor seven different metrics associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If worn properly, the test can determine whether you qualify for an OSA diagnosis after just one night. WatchPAT One may be a more convenient alternative to an overnight sleep study, the traditional method for testing people for OSA symptoms.

To receive the test, you'll need to submit some assessment forms and schedule an online appointment with a licensed physician. This helps determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria for OSA. If the test confirms you have OSA symptoms, you'll meet with a sleep coach to discuss treatment and other follow-up steps. The test is disposable. You must be 18 years of age to take this test.

  • Chest, wrist, and finger sensors measure peripheral arterial tone, heart rate, blood oxygen, actigraphy, body position, snoring, and chest motion
  • Testers receive an AHI score in their follow-up email
  • Those who meet diagnostic criteria for OSA after testing may be prescribed PAP therapy
  • Unopened tests may be returned within 60 days

We recommend an at-home sleep study for:

  • People who frequently snore or wake up gasping for air
  • Those who suspect they have sleep apnea but wish to forgo traditional polysomnography

    So EASY!!

The last time I did a sleep study at the hospital, it was torturous! But the at-home sleep study was so easy and in the comfort of my own bed. It results showed were and when I seemed to be having the most trouble with my breathing while asleep. Racheal took the time to review my results and provided me with feedback for solutions. It was super easy!

    Happy with test

It was incredibly easy to do. No problems at all. Also, I got the results back in less than 2 days - and this was over a weekend!

When I spoke to the person about my results, she took the time to explain them to me and asked questions pertaining to me, not the general public. I would recommend to friends!

    Perfect

Sleep studies take forever to get scheduled and approved from insurance. This was quick and easy to get going. Saved me a ton of time and energy. I would recommend to anyone who's wife is urging you to get the test completed.

    Well worth it!

The Home Study was simple, easy and accurate.

I had an in-clinical sleep study done 10 years ago, so I knew I had sleep apnea. Back then the device was clunky, the mask was awkward, so I never really used my CPAP. Fast forward, my episodes had gotten worse. I was now jumping out my sleep with my heart racing, shaking and extremely tired throughout the day. My quality of life tanked. I didn't want to do another expensive sleep study to get the necessary prescription to get another CPAP machine. The old one was destroyed in a flood.

I contacted Sleep Doctor, submitted my insurance, which was more expensive than just buying out right. So, I purchased the home sleep study outright. They even gave me a discount. Had a quick meeting over the phone, received my device and conducted the study at home.

Next, I met with a Specialist the next day, who walked through all the findings, which were very detailed. She put together a cart of what I needed & wanted. This time I opted for a APAP with a nose pillow mask. She also put me in touch with a company if I wanted to go through my insurance. I opted to buy direct for numerous reasons. She hooked me up with replacement parts, cleaning tools and everything. Easy and efficient.

Everything was delivered within a week. Setup was easy and I'm glad I trusted the technology.

    Good luck & rest well!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the sleep study cause sleep problems?

Some people who take our at-home sleep study experience anxiety during the night, which can make it hard to fall asleep and lead to inaccurate results. However, we're confident you'll be more comfortable and relaxed in your own bed than if you participated in an overnight sleep study at a sleep center.

For most people, the home sleep test can gather enough information after one night – even if you are nervous and experience sleep disruptions. If you sleep 2.5 hours or less, you should consider retaking the sleep test.

How does the at-home sleep study work?

The WatchPAT features a wrist sensor, pulse oximeter, and chest sensor. The device uses three points of contact – the wrist, finger, and neck – to collect data for seven key sleep apnea metrics.

The device measures central and obstructive sleep apnea events, true sleep time, snoring, breathing rates, oxygen saturation levels, heart rate, your body's position, and how much time you spend in each sleep stage.

Designed for comprehensive results, our sleep test helps your doctor make an informed diagnosis and therapy recommendations. The WatchPAT's sensors send data directly to a doctor via your cell phone's Bluetooth.

How much does a home sleep study cost?

Our test costs $189 and includes a virtual consultation with a board-certified sleep specialist to make sure you are a candidate for a sleep study.

If you opt for an overnight study at a sleep center, expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $3,000 for your stay.

How are people tested for sleep apnea?

Anyone seeking a sleep apnea diagnosis has two options: an overnight sleep study at a sleep lab, or an at-home sleep study.

Most center-based sleep studies are conducted over the course of one to two nights. At-home tests are faster and more convenient. Keep in mind that both types of tests require a doctor's prescription.

What is the purpose of a sleep study?

Sleep studies are used to monitor your sleep patterns. Doctors use the study's results to diagnose insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders.

What equipment is included in the box?

When you open your at-home sleep apnea test, you’ll find an illustrated user guide as well as a QR code that links to an instructional video. The test itself has three main components.

  • Chest sensor: A quarter-sized adhesive sensor that you place on your chest to detect body position, snoring, and chest movement.
  • WatchPat One wristband: This watch-like device fastens around your wrist and measures your body movement.
  • Finger probe: This third sensor slides over your finger to determine your pulse, blood oxygen level, and peripheral arterial tone.

Is an at-home sleep study covered by insurance?

Though most customers pay cash, this at-home sleep study is covered by more than a dozen insurance providers including Medicare as well as HSAs and FSAs. Click the Pay Using Insurance link to see which companies we work with.

Keep in mind that your insurance plan might not cover both the device and virtual appointment and you may be responsible for co-pays or out-of-pocket costs.

Contact your insurance provider to learn the specifics of your plan and coverage details. CPAP machines and other products purchased through Sleep Doctor are not covered by insurance.

How accurate is a home sleep study?

The WatchPat One home sleep study has a 98% patient success rate and is cleared by the FDA. Studies indicate that at-home sleep tests like this one are up to 95% as accurate () as a traditional polysomnography, which is the test you’d get in a hospital or at an in-person sleep center.

Do you need a prescription for sleep apnea therapy?

CPAP machines and face masks are federally regulated medical devices in the United States, so you'll need a prescription for these components – both of which are essential for CPAP therapy. You can obtain a prescription by completing a sleep study or test, then receiving a sleep apnea diagnosis from a board-certified physician.

Are there any disadvantages to a home sleep test?

Though they’re relatively easy to use, home sleep tests do require that you follow the instructions correctly to get accurate, thorough results. Improperly fitting sensors, other bedroom electronics, and unreliable internet can all affect your test results and lead to incorrect or insufficient data.

When getting an in-person sleep study, there’s staff present to reconnect devices if they come loose. At home, you may not notice sensor disconnections yourself in time to fix them. Smart watches, electronic bed bases, and bluetooth devices can also affect your home sleep study’s connectivity if you don’t shut them off before starting your test. We recommend following all included instructions with your home sleep study.

What is included in the sleep study results?

Your sleep study results include a thorough summary of your sleep, a diagnosis if applicable, and help with the next steps. The results are comprehensive and include important measurements that can determine whether you have sleep apnea, and if so, its severity.

You’ll see your apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score, which measures the average number of apneic and hypopneic events you experience per hour of sleep. The results also include an insomnia severity index score and information about your sleep-wake cycle.

Each sleep study result includes recommendations and treatment options made by a board-certified physician.
