How often do I need to replace my PAP machine’s humidifier chamber?

While the recommended replacement schedule can vary, most PAP humidifier chambers should be replaced every six months. As you use your humidifier, minor damage and mineral buildup can increase the risk of the tank harboring bacteria.

How do I clean a humidifier chamber?

Most PAP machine humidifier chambers can be cleaned by soaking them in hot, soapy water for half an hour before rinsing well. A solution of one part white vinegar and three parts hot water can also be used to eliminate mineral buildup. These cleaning methods work for most humidifier tanks, but it is important to double-check your PAP machine’s user manual so that you know the specific guidelines for your model.

Do I need to use distilled water in a PAP humidifier?

Using distilled water in your humidifier is the best way to avoid mineral and microbial buildup. Even if you clean your humidifier chamber regularly, using tap water can make the chamber less hygienic and shorten its lifespan.

Does insurance cover replacement humidifier tanks for PAP machines?

Replacement PAP supplies, including humidifier chambers, are covered by most insurance providers. However, the specifics of that coverage — such as how often you can replace the humidifier tank — can vary significantly between providers. Sleep Doctor does not currently accept insurance payments for PAP supplies. However, we provide you with the paperwork you will need to submit to your provider for reimbursement.
