Medicare pays for adjustable beds that are classified as “hospital-grade,” but does not cover standard adjustable beds. Hospital-grade beds are considered durable medical equipment (DME). Medicare will cover 80% of the cost of a hospital-grade adjustable bed if certain conditions are met, including:
- Your primary care provider has prescribed a hospital-grade adjustable bed for use in your home
- You and your primary care provider are both enrolled in Medicare
- You cover the remaining 20% of the cost
Also, DME suppliers who are Medicare-enrolled can only charge you for coinsurance and deductible amounts based on what Medicare approves. If the suppliers aren’t Medicare-enrolled, there is no limit for how much they can charge you.
