What is a travel CPAP machine?

Travel CPAP machines provide all the functionality of a CPAP machine in a much smaller shell. Some models have automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) settings as well as features that have been adjusted to be travel-friendly, such as waterless humidification. If you plan to be off the grid for a short period, you can even find some that are compatible with an external battery.

Can travel CPAP machines be used at home?

Although travel CPAP machines are an effective way to treat sleep apnea, it’s better to use a standard CPAP machine when you’re home. Shrinking the components of a standard CPAP machine to fit into a smaller shell gives travel machines a shorter lifespan when used every day. Most people also prefer standard humification features to waterless humidification for daily use.

How do I choose the right travel CPAP machine for my needs?

You should choose a travel CPAP machine that suits your medical needs, personal preferences, favorite ways to travel, and budget. It can help to make a list of features — such as APAP settings or external battery compatibility — that you need your machine to have. Some leading travel CPAP machines are only compatible with select masks from the same manufacturer. It’s worth including the cost of buying a second mask when considering your budget.

Can I use a travel CPAP machine on an airplane?

Many travel CPAP machines are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for in-flight use. While this is also true for some standard CPAP machines, the smaller size of a travel CPAP machine makes them much easier to bring in your carry-on or even a purse.

Do you need a prescription to buy a travel CPAP machine?
